Supporting Children As They Return To School

Following the devastating floods of August 26, 2026, Friends of Humanity is supporting flood-affected children and schools in Nuwakot, Nepal. After the floods, children lost more than their homes. Many students lost their school uniforms, bags and learning materials, while schools themselves suffered damage and lost essential classroom resources.

FOH’s response focuses on helping children return to school with dignity and safety through health check-ups, essential school supplies and uniforms, while supporting schools in recovering from the damage caused by the floods.

Listening. Assessing. Responding.

Our representative in Nepal, Mukunda Dhungana, has been visiting flood-affected communities and schools, meeting with:

→ School principals and teachers

→ Local authorities and ward representatives

→ Displaced families

→ Children affected by the disaster

These field visits have helped FOH identify the most urgent needs and coordinate a targeted response with local schools and authorities.

Health Comes First

At Shree Tindhare Pipal Danda Secondary School, FOH supported a health camp where 171 students and 17 teachers received health check-ups. The school is located in a remote area where access to medical care remains difficult. Medicines prescribed during the consultations are now being arranged from Kathmandu, as some were unavailable at the local health post.

Helping Childre Return To School

FOH has begun providing essential school supplies to help affected children resume their education.

  • At Tindhare Pipal Danda Secondary School, uniforms have been ordered for 75 primary students, including children from nursery through Class 5.
  • At Balmandir Basic School, FOH has also ordered school uniforms, house dresses and warm tracksuits for the affected children.

The aim is simple: help children return to school feeling prepared, supported and included.

Balmandir School

At Balmandir Basic School, the situation was particularly difficult.

During the visit, FOH found that the children were suffering from a viral fever. An emergency doctor was called to assess their condition, and classroom mats were replaced to help keep the children warm. FOH is also supporting the school with uniforms and other essential items as the children prepare to continue their education.

What Comes Next

Friends of Humanity has provided CHF 10,000 in emergency funding to support the first phase of our response in flood-affected schools in Nuwakot. This is only the beginning.

FOH is continuing to coordinate closely with schools, local representatives and municipal authorities to ensure that assistance reaches children where it is needed most.

Together, we can help children get back to school — and back to hope.

Nepal Needs Our Help

On 26 August, devastating flash floods struck communities along the Tibet–Nepal border. More than 1,000 people have been confirmed dead, while more than 5,000 remain missing across Nepal and Tibet, with countless families having lost their homes, livelihoods and loved ones.

At Friends of Humanity (FOH), this region holds a special place in our hearts. For years, we have supported vulnerable communities in Nepal and Tibet through emergency aid, healthcare, education, and access to basic necessities.

The impact on children is devastating. At least 69 schools have been destroyed or damaged, putting nearly 19,000 students at risk of losing access to their education. One local hero, Rajendra Dawadi, saved around 900 children by evacuating them moments before the flood swept through their school. Today, he is calling for the schools to be rebuilt urgently so that children can return to their classrooms and continue their education.

Having supported children and schools in rural Nepal over the years, FOH wants to continue supporting their education, especially now when so many children have lost so much. Our priority is to provide first necessities to vulnerable families, particularly elderly people, while helping affected children access the school supplies and resources they need to return to their studies and regain a sense of normality.

Our Founder and President, Graziella Zanoletti, who has personally visited and worked in these communities in the past, is deeply saddened and touched by the scale of this disaster.

Our FOH representative in Nepal, Mukunda Dhungana, is currently on the ground, travelling to the affected areas and witnessing their suffering firsthand. He has seen families grieving the loss of loved ones, homes and livelihoods, and heard stories that have deeply moved him. He is determined to stay close to these communities and provide hands-on assistance and essential supplies to those who need them most.
